چکیده

Comparative Analysis of Labor Market Dynamics Using Markov Processes: An Application to Informality This paper discusses a set of statistics for examining and comparing labor market dynamics based on the estimation of continuous time Markov transition processes. It then uses these to establish stylized facts about dynamic patterns of movement using panel data from Argentina, Brazil and Mexico. The estimates suggest broad commonalities among the three countries, and establish numerous common patterns of worker mobility among sectors of work and inactivity. As such, we offer some of the first comparative work on labor dynamics. The paper then particularly focuses on the role of the informal sector, both for its intrinsic interest, and as a case study illustrating the strengths and limits of the tools. The results suggest that a substantial part of the informal sector, particularly the self-employed, corresponds to voluntary entry although informal salaried work may correspond more closely to the standard queuing view, especially for younger workers. The Persistence of Informality: Evidence from Panel Data

The Persistence of Informality: Evidence from Panel Data Informality is a growing phenomenon in the developing and transition country labor market context. In particular, it is noticeable that working in an informal employment relationship is often not temporary. The degree of persistence of informality in the labor market might be due to different sources: structural state dependence due to pa...

Labor Market Dynamics in Developing Countries: Comparative Analysis using Continuous Time Markov Processes

This paper studies the dynamics of three developing country labor markets employing recent advances in the estimation of continuous time Markov processes. We first examine the flows of workers among five states: three types of paid labor, unemployment, and out of the labor force. We find a high degree of commonality in patterns of worker flows among the three countries and attempt to compare th...

Application of Markov Processes to the Machine Delays Analysis

Production and non-productive equipment and personnel delays are a critical element of any production system. The frequency and length of delays impact heavily on the production and economic efficiency of these systems. Machining processes in wood industry are particularly vulnerable to productive and non-productive delays. Whereas, traditional manufacturing industries usually operate on homoge...

Reliability analysis of repairable systems using system dynamics modeling and simulation

Repairable standby system’s study and analysis is an important topic in reliability. Analytical techniques become very complicated and unrealistic especially for modern complex systems. There have been attempts in the literature to evolve more realistic techniques using simulation approach for reliability analysis of systems. This paper proposes a hybrid approach called as Markov system ...

Product Market Competition and Informality in Mexico

Mexico has engaged in many trade agreements that have left unaffected internal competition, being one of the most trade-opened countries in the world is also one of the most restrictive regarding product market competition. For developing countries, this is a field to study that still need to be undertaken. This paper relates informality in the Mexican labor markets outcomes with market competi...
